To the Parents and Students of the International Baccalaureate class of 2023,

As we finish the first year of the International Baccalaureate program and prepare to enter the final year, we would like to inform you of some very important information regarding the IB Extended Essay (“EE”).  As you may be aware, the Extended Essay is one of the three core requirements for completing the diploma program and ultimately earning the IB Diploma.

Simply put, the EE is an “extended” research paper [4000-word essay] that students must complete this fall semester, spending approximately 40 hours of research and writing beginning in their junior year.  Students already have a supervisor—a Valencia teacher who will advise IB candidates through three mandatory meetings spread over the course of the junior and senior years. The supervisor’s role is crucial for the authentication of the student’s EE.  Failure to meet with the supervisor for all three mandatory meetings will jeopardize the authentication of the EE and the IB diploma candidacy.

To ensure an enriching and successful outcome through the EE process, please take note of the following key dates:

  • June 16, 2022: 1st Reflection in the RPPF
  • Summer 2022: Review Exemplars, Continue research and complete rough draft (3,000—3,500 words)
  • September 14, 2022: EE Rough Draft due to supervisor
  • September 15 -October 21, 2022: meet with supervisor to discuss EE rough draft and 2nd Reflection
  • October—November 2022: revisions to the EE; Saturday mini-workshops
  • December 7, 2022: Final Essay due to supervisor and ManageBac
  • January 27, 2023: Viva Voce, 3rd Reflection completed

For a closer look, a detailed timeline is printed on the other side of this letter.  We encourage students to check and upload the different parts of the EE to valencia.managebac.comWe further encourage parents to check in periodically with their student to monitor their progress through ManageBac.

We know how incredibly busy students are at this time of year.  Therefore, it is of utmost importance for IB students to consistently work to meet the EE deadlines—failure to meet all deadlines and to complete the necessary elements of the EE may result in the student being unable to earn their IB diploma.  Our EE supervisors are here to support students and ensure an enriching experience with the extended essay.  If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Chung at [email protected]

In order to make sure the lines of communication are clearly open and that you are aware of the EE guidelines, please sign and return (upload photo to ManageBac) the attached consent/comment form.

Best Regards,

David Chung

Extended Essay Coordinator
