Hi,
My name is Joy Millam and I began my college career at Oregon State University. After graduation in June of 1986, I moved to California and continued my education at Chapman University where I received my teaching credential.
I began my teaching career as a substitute teacher for Santa Ana Unified and PYLUSD. I held positions at Bloomington High School (4 years), Landmark Middle School before landing at Valencia High School in 1994. I have taught everything from Language Arts 1 to U.S. History, and Newspaper.
After teaching freshmen Language Arts for 13 years I felt a change was in order and was hired as the Teacher Librarian after the retirement of Carolyn Weber. I completed my Master's in School Librarianship at Azusa Pacific University in the summer of 2005.
The past 12 years in the library have been a great challenge and I've enjoyed the new learning experiences and advances in technology. However, I will admit that I miss the everyday, long term interactions that I enjoyed with my students in my classroom.
On the homefront, I am married to a great man, Todd, and we have 3 girls between us. Jesseca is 24, has graduated from Biola University, and is my little tiger (VHS alumnus, Class of 2009). Chelsea, 24, graduated from Mater Dei in 2009 and is attending Goldenwest College. Ali, 27, graduated from Long Beach State and is an elementary school teacher.
I enjoy traveling and have taken trips to France, Spain, Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, Ensenada/Rosarito, Hawaii and Victoria B.C. In the past, we were frequent riders in the Rosarito-Ensenada Bike Ride. A 50 mile fun-ride sounds crazy, but it is a blast. We also enjoy scuba diving and have seen some pretty amazing sights underwater.
One of my favorite places on the planet is Yosemite. It is the most breathtaking place in the United States. It is a true national treasure.
Finally, it should be noted that I am an Angels baseball fanatic! I love that baseball team and their win in 2002 was a great time for me and the other longtime Angels fans. The picture I've included was from the American League Championship Series against the Minnesota Twins. Look at all those thunder-stix Go HALOS!!!
Thank you for visiting my page and I hope to see you in the library soon. Be sure to check out the Library web pages. There are several pages with helpful links to the online catalogs and resources that can be of great assistance.
